BRITISH COLOUR STANDARD - Amethyst Violet No. 159

A colour name which has been in use since the middle of the sixteenth century, representing a hue of the precious stone determined in 1938.

Amethyst comes from the Greek word Amethystos meaning 'not intoxicated'. This is in reference to the belief that the Violet stone could protect its owner from drunkenness.
